Technology at Oakland University

Oakland University E-mail

Oakland provides each student with an e-mail address and service. Instead of sending information through the U.S. Postal Service, Oakland University will e-mail information and direct links to secured Web sites to students via their official Oakland University email address, including grades availability, tuition bills, financial aid, schedule of classes and graduation information. This information is important to maintaining a student’s relationship with the university. The university will hold students accountable for the information sent via e-mail. Therefore, students are encouraged to check their Oakland e-mail account, at least twice each week.

Oakland’s University Technology Services Web site offers tips and information about activating, accessing and forwarding Oakland University e-mail at www.oakland.edu/uts/ or selecting the Info Tech button from Oakland University’s home page, then clicking E-mail Services.

Oakland University will not sell or give away student e-mail information and will not use e-mail to advertise for third parties.

UTS Helpdesk

The Helpdesk helps all members of the Oakland University community connect to Internet resources and utilize Oakland’s e-mail system. We also answer general technology questions. The Helpdesk will work only on university-owned equipment. The UTS Helpdesk is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., on Monday through Friday. You can contact the UTS Helpdesk in several different ways, in person, by phone, by e-mail, or by fax.

Wireless Network

Oakland University provides Internet access to all on-campus residents through a wireless network in the residence halls and Matthews Court Apartments and both wired and wireless Internet in the University Student Apartments. Also, students who visit specific areas on campus, such as Kresge Library, Elliott Hall, the Oakland Center and Recreation Center, will have wireless Internet access.

Student Technology Center (STC)

The STC has 13 PCs and four Macintosh computers. Students can take advantage of the student mentors and group classes that teach them about Windows XP, OS X, the ILife series, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Premier Elements, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The classes and mentor services are free and available by appointment or on a walk-in basis. The STC also teaches students about integrating interactive media into course-related works by allowing students to borrow digital video cameras or still cameras at no charge from the STC for 48 hours to capture media that can be used to enhance projects. Scanners, CD and DVD burners, fee-based color printers and technology reference books are also available to students in the STC.
