This course introduces contemporary issues in global health, communicable and non-
communicable diseases, organizations dedicated to improving health care on an
international level, ethical dilemmas, the political and economic disparities to address
contemporary health concerns, and health in the age of technology. The class will be
discussion-oriented using course materials, case studies and in-class activities
specifically designed to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Learning Outcomes:
To explain the ethical and social challenges in global health;
To highlight the disparities in health and the burden of disease in various
regions of the world, as well as how it varies both within and across
countries;
To introduce the emerging trends in health that transcend national
boundaries.
To examine the role of government in global health issues;
Assignments and Grading: Tentative Course Outline
The course will examine issues on health care that are relevant to the global community
at large. This class will be more of a “hands on” learning experience and have a
discussion format. Students will read and discuss the implications and findings of case
studies and articles, which accompany major topics.

* It is expected that students will complete case study evaluations as well as all other
assignments prior to the next class as these materials will serve as the basis for
subsequent class discussion and additional active learning strategies.
Grading Scale
I will use the following grading scale when assigning your final grade. In the interim you
are to check your grades regularly. You have one (1) week from the time I post your
grade to question the grade assigned to you. Once that week has past, I will make NO
changes and the grade posted will stand.
