Interdisciplinary and comparative overview of fundamental lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) concepts as they relate to history, culture, literature, and theory. Particular focus on race, ethnicity, social class, and gender.

Learning Outcomes:
General Education Student Learning Outcomes (Social Science):
The student will demonstrate:

  • knowledge of concepts, methods and theories designed to enhance understanding of human behavior and/or societies
  • application of concepts and theories to problems involving individuals, institutions, or nations

 

If students carefully read the assigned readings and actively participate in class discussion, they will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the importance of LGBTQ issues in the U.S. and in international contexts (GESLO Social Science 1) ;
  • Investigate the various ways that race, class, age, nation, and other axes of identity combine to create the complex realities of LGBTQ people (GESLO Social Science 1);
  • Acquire a theoretical understanding pertaining to non-normative sexualities and gender categories (GESLO Social Science 2);
  • Examine the history and importance of the LGBTQ movement (GESLO Social Science 1);
  • Critically evaluate images of the LGBTQ community represented in popular culture (GESLO Social Science 2); and
  • Analyze current events and their impact on the lives of LGBTQ people (GESLO Social Science 2).

Attendance Policy:
Because the success of our course depends upon you being here, I expect you to be here. I do take attendance. You will receive an attendance grade based on being in class and being involved in discussion. I understand that emergencies and illnesses arise, and that you may need to miss a class. However, I will accept assignments only if you are in class UNLESS you have a documented and excused absence. Excused absences require a doctor’s notes, or paper verification of the emergency.
