Explores the foundation of Chinese civilization and the rise of the Chinese empire until the beginning of the Qing dynasty. Major topics include the ancient roots of Chinese civilization, Confucianism, Daoism, Chinese Buddhism, empire building from Qin to Han, Tang cosmopolitanism, Song-Yuan transformation, Ming-Qing expansion and stagnation and gender relations.
