Department Website
The department of Art, Art History and Design offers Bachelor of Arts degrees and minors in art history, graphic design and studio art. Students can also receive K-12 art education certification in collaboration with the School of Education and Human Services. There are no portfolio requirements for enrollment in studio art and graphic design.
Faculty, active practitioners in their fields, provide students industry-ready mentorship in innovative and diverse courses. Our graduates have strong communication, creative problem-solving, and versatile technical skills needed for art and design careers and graduate studies.
The department offers its students access to resources such as the Oakland University Art Gallery, the Makers’ Studio that houses state-of-the-art technology, creative student clubs, and a free MacBook laptop rental program for graphic design majors. Study abroad opportunities include a six-week summer experience to study art history in Volterra, Italy.
Departmental Honors in Art History
Graduating seniors who have completed 20 credits of art history at Oakland University with a GPA of 3.65 or higher in art history courses will be considered for departmental honors. Art history faculty will review the student’s AH 4998 and AH 4999 capstone work and vote on whether to award honors.
Departmental Honors in Graphic Design
Graduating seniors who have completed 20 credits of graphic design at Oakland University with a GPA of 3.65 or higher in graphic design courses will be considered for departmental honors. Design faculty will review the student’s DES 4430 work and vote on whether to award honors.
Departmental Honors in Studio Art
Graduating seniors who have completed 20 credits of studio art at Oakland University with a GPA of 3.65 or higher in studio art courses will be considered for departmental honors. Studio art faculty will review the student’s ART 4999 work and vote on whether to award honors.
