The Department of English, Creative Writing, and Film offers B.A. degrees in Creative Writing, English, English with a Concentration in Linguistics, English Language Arts, Film and Film Production. For individual program details, click on the appropriate link. The Department also offers an M.A. program in English, described in the Oakland University Graduate Catalogue, and a streamlined B.A. to M.A. track.

The English B.A. program offers courses in British, American, and world literatures. English majors gain critical understanding of imaginative writing and sensitivity to all uses of language, while developing skills in analysis, research, and communication. Their study enhances their personal growth while preparing them for a wide variety of careers and graduate study.

English Language Arts for Educators B.A. is a four-year program intended for students interested in pursuing state teacher certification at the 5-9 and 7-12 grade bands. Upon completion, students will transition into the English Language Arts for Educators, B.A./Teaching in Secondary Education, MAT, Combined B.A./MAT program to earn teacher certification.

The Creative Writing B.A. develops students’ writing skills in a wide variety of supportive workshops with fellow students and hones analytical skills through courses in literature and film. Students specialize in one genre (fiction, poetry, dramatic writing, or literary nonfiction) and through the many internships we offer gain practical experience that prepares them for a wide variety of professional settings.

The B.A. in Film/B.A. in Film Production programs are designed for students to work closely with faculty to gain a thorough understanding of filmmaking, history, and theory during their time at OU. Students benefit from small class sizes, plentiful internship and professionalization opportunities, and a large and growing alumni base.

Program honors may be awarded to graduating majors for outstanding achievement in their respective fields.
