Requirements for the liberal arts minor in astronomy

To earn a minor in astronomy, students must complete the following requirements. At least 12 credits not being used to fulfill any other major or minor program requirements are required.

1. Prerequisite courses

In order to enroll in the minor, students must have completed the two algebra-based or calculus-based introductory physics courses.

In sequence:

PHY 1010 or PHY 1080 or PHY 1510 or PHY 1610

and

PHY 1020 or PHY 1090 or PHY 1520 or PHY 1620
MTH 1555 - Calculus II (4)

2. Required courses

PHY 1040 - Astronomy: The Solar System (4)
PHY 1050 - Astronomy: Stars and Galaxies (4)
PHY 3040 - Astrophysics I (4)
PHY 3710 - Foundations of Modern Physics (4)

3. At least 2 additional credits selected from

PHY 3050 - Astrophysics II (4)
PHY 3060 - Observational Astronomy (2)
