Certificate in Dance Education

The Certificate in Dance Education is a special course of study designed for candidates who wish to teach Dance in a K-12 setting. It is designed to give students the knowledge and skills that allow them to effectively use National Core Art Standards (NCAS) in Dance in both public and private schools. Candidates must complete an application and demonstrate that they possess the basic competencies in Dance to successfully complete the certificate.

Admission requirements:

Application demonstrating competencies in Dance that will show ability to complete the program.
Applicants are admitted to one of three tracks, based on their previous experience and degree.

Program requirements:

Traditional Certificate in Dance Education (26 credits)

For students currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Dance, or with a completed bachelor’s degree in Dance

DAN 2441 - Educational Psychology and Dance Learning (4 credits)
DAN 4800 - Dance Education Seminar (1 credit, repeated for a total of 4 credits)
DAN 4810 - Teaching Dance to Students with Disabilities (3 credits)
DAN 4820 - Implementing the National Core Dance Standards (3 credits)
DAN 4952 - Internship in K-12 Dance Education (12 credits)

Alternate Certification in Dance Education (16 credits)

For candidates with a completed bachelor’s degree in Dance and a full-time position in a K-12 school as a Dance Educator

DAN 2441 - Educational Psychology and Dance Learning (4 credits)
DAN 4800 - Dance Education Seminar (1 credit, repeated for a total of 6 credits)
DAN 4810 - Teaching Dance to Students with Disabilities (3 credits)
DAN 4820 - Implementing the National Core Dance Standards (3 credits)

Certificate in Dance Education (15 credits)

For candidates with a completed bachelor’s degree in any endorsed content in K-12 Education

DAN 2441 - Educational Psychology and Dance Learning (4 credits)
DAN 3030 - Kinesiology for the Dancer (4 credits)
DAN 4800 - Dance Education Seminar (1 credit, repeated for a total of 4 credits)
DAN 4830 - Elements of Movement (1 credit)
DAN 4840 - Pedagogy: Learning Styles and Theories (1 credit)
DAN 4850 - Developmental Domains (1 credit)
