Course Descriptions

Project Management Principles

The Project Management Principles course provides a broad overview of project management and a solid foundation for students to begin studying for the Project Management Professional (PMP ®) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM ®) exams offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Oakland’s course fulfills the PMI’s 35-hour project management education requirement for certification.

Project Management Principles aligns with the 6th edition of the PMBOK ® Guide; it is recommended that students obtain a copy of the guide to further their studies and reinforce course content. The course is highly interactive and uses a “learn by doing” approach which creates a high energy learning environment and teaches both cognitive and behavioral skills.

Students who complete the course and attend all sessions will receive a Certificate of Achievement from OU PACE, but students seeking the full PMP or CAPM certification must apply to take the exam through the PMI.

Before you apply to take the exam through the PMI, make sure you meet of the following sets of PMP Certification requirements:

  • A four-year degree
  • Three years leading projects
  • 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification

- OR -

  • A high school diploma or an associate’s degree (or global equivalent)
  • Five years leading projects
  • 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification

Details on additional requirements to sit for the exam can be found on the PMI website

Agile Project Management Principles and Practices

As an Authorized Training Partner of the Project Management Institute (PMI), Oakland University offers the Agile Project Management Principles and Practices Course in a 100% live online, instructor-led format.

The course provides students with a solid foundation of Agile principles and practices. Throughout the course, students will be presented with best practices in Agile approaches including Scrum, Kanban, Lean, Extreme Programming (XP), and Feature-Driven Development (FDD).

Oakland University’s Agile Project Management Principles and Practices Course fulfills the PMI’s
prerequisite of 21 contact hours of training in Agile practices required to sit for the PMI-ACP Certification exam.

Why Agile?
As more organizations move towards flexible, value-driven cultures to deliver faster and better solutions that meet the customer requirements, the Agile approach provides cross-functional collaborative teams and engaged stakeholders to the organizations to meet the dynamic needs of the market. The need for “Organization Agility” has been never been greater. As reported by PMI in their “Achieving Greater Agility” report, “Organizations with high agility report more projects successfully meeting original goals and business intent”.

The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® is the Project Management Institute’s fastest growing certification.
