Social Studies with History for Educators, B.A.

Students must complete the Oakland University General Education Requirements, General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, College of Arts and Sciences College Exploratory Requirement, Major Requirements, and an appropriate number of free elective classes to meet the overall credit requirement for the degree (in most cases a minimum of 124; some degrees may require a greater number).

As a general rule, no more than eight credits of coursework used to satisfy one major, minor or concentration may be applied toward another, but exceptions to this rule may be allowed with the written approval of the program coordinators.

General Education Requirements


In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundation, Exploration, Integration, Writing, U.S. Diversity and Capstone. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

Requirements for the Social Studies with History for Educators, B.A.


The Bachelor of Arts at the undergraduate level is intended for students interested in pursuing a state teacher certification at the 5-9 and 7-12 grade bands.

1. Students in this program must complete the requirements for a BA degree in the
College of Arts and Sciences and concurrently fulfill the requirements listed below including 44 credits in History.

2. No single major course grade may be below C. Successful completion of WRT 1060  and SED 1000  with a grade of B or better.

3. Students interested in continuing towards a secondary education certification will transition into the Social Studies with History for Educators, B.A./Teaching in Secondary Education, MAT, Combined B.A./MAT . At the undergraduate level, the Combined BA/MAT program allows students to apply for and receive delayed admission into the MAT program. Further details on program admission requirements and procedures can be found by consulting advisers in the Department of History and the School of Education and Human Services advising office at 363 Pawley Hall, (248) 370-4182, or the School of Education and Human Services website.

Delayed admission into the MAT program permits students to substitute the 12 elective credits for four graduate level courses, SED 5000, SED 5100, SED 5110 and SED 5150, while still an undergraduate and pay undergraduate tuition rates.
