Requirements for the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) PreK-12 Minor


To earn a TESOL PreK-12 Minor, students must complete a minimum of 24 credits to include the following courses:

Credit toward the minor will only be allowed for courses with a grade of C or higher.

Practicum eligibility


Eligibility for the Practicum (ALS 4960 ) requires completion of ALS 4418  and ALS 4438  with a grade of B or higher and instructor permission.

Additional information


For students following the (TESOL) PreK-12 Minor as part of the OU Teacher Education Program, application to the STEP requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in courses in the major and the minor. To progress into the internship year, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in both their major and minor coursework, with no single course grade below C. Second undergraduate degree candidates completing the minor may be required to take additional courses at Oakland University beyond the stated minimums. Students must consult with an adviser in the School of Education and Human Services.

Additionally, candidates for the (TESOL) PreK-12 Minor must meet the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) standards for teacher preparation in TESOL by completion of the following:

  1. Completion of core content area program (minimum 30 semester hours/major) in conjunction with or prior to adding the ESL Endorsement.
  2. A core content program (minimum 30 semester hours/major) can be in Elementary Education, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, or Mathematics as a base for the ESL endorsement.
  3. Students must demonstrate English language proficiency by meeting Oakland University’s English language proficiency requirement upon registration for the program.
  4. Students must also have documented experience learning a second language equivalent to two semesters’ worth of college-level study in order to gain an understanding and appreciation of the processes of learning an additional language.
