Integrated Science, BA/Teaching in Secondary Education, MAT, Combined BA/MAT


Requirements for the Integrated Science, BA/Teaching in Secondary Education, MAT, Combined B.A./MAT


The Combined BA/MAT at Oakland University is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) granted by the College of Arts and Sciences to Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education (MAT) granted by the School of Education and leading to the recommendation for state certification in secondary teaching. At the undergraduate level, the combined B.A./MAT program allows students to take four graduate level courses SED 5000, SED 5100, SED 5110 and SED 5150 while still an undergraduate and pay undergraduate tuition rates.

Specific offerings for each semester may be found in the Schedule of Classes.

To earn a combined BA/MAT and be eligible for certification, students must complete the Integrated Science, BA and the courses listed below:


  • SED 5000 Foundations 1: Introduction to Secondary Education (3)
  • SED 5100 Teaching for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (3)
  • SED 5110 Instruction I: Introduction to Secondary Methods (3)
  • SED 5150 How People Learn (3)
  • SED 5210 Instruction 2: Methods in the Discipline (3)
  • SED 5600 Foundations 2: Supporting learning through Skillful Teaching (3)
  • RDG 5558 Disciplinary Literacy (3)
  • SED 5650 Foundations 3: Developing as a Professional (3)
  • SED 5955 Student Teaching (6)
  • SED 6000 Instruction 3: Advanced Instruction (3) (Required course taken post full year internship)

Requirements for application to the combined BA/MAT


Students are eligible to apply to the combined B.A./MAT program once they have successfully completed the required pre-professional and pre-program content coursework, which requires having met the following criteria:

Complete the Graduate Application and receive delayed admission into the MAT program due by May 1st of each year. (Late applications will be considered with discretion.) Complete a minimum of 24 credits in the Integrated Science major and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

Additional department application requirements:

  • Goal statement
  • Resume (Curriculum Vitae)
  • Two recommendations (must be from individuals in a supervisory relationship to the applicant, using the e-form provided by the Graduate School)
  • Felony Misdemeanor Disclosure Form
  • Michigan Code of Educational Ethics Acknowledgement Form

NOTE: Individual interviews may be conducted in addition to these requirements.

To successfully complete the program and earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education, students must meet each of the requirements outlined below:


  • Complete the required undergraduate, major specific courses with a grade of C or higher.
  • Complete WRT 1060  and SED 1000  with a grade of B or better.
  • Complete the 33-credit graduate level courses professional sequence with a grade of B or higher in each course and fulfill the 600 field hour requirement.
  • Professional courses may not be older than six years upon graduation.
  • To be eligible for a Michigan Teaching Certificate, graduates must be in compliance with all legal requirements.

Additional Information


Students enrolled in the previous Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) programs will have the option to complete their current program or transition into the B.A./MAT in Secondary Education through the expiration of the current Michigan teacher certification requirements in the 2028-2029 academic year.
