Sociology/Anthropology, B.A.

Students must complete the Oakland University General Education Requirements, General College of Arts and Sciences requirements , College of Arts and Sciences Exploratory requirement , Major Requirements, and an appropriate number of free elective classes to meet the overall credit requirement for the degree (in most cases a minimum of 124; some degrees may require a greater number).

A student cannot declare a major and a minor in the same discipline (e.g. a BS in Accounting with a minor in Accounting).

General Education Requirements

In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

Requirements

To earn a Bachelor of Arts with a combined major in sociology/anthropology, students must complete a minimum of 20 credits in sociology and 20 credits in anthropology including the following:

1. Sociology courses

SOC 1000 - Introduction to Sociology (4) or SOC 1010 - Introduction to Sociology through Health and Medicine (4)
SOC 2010 - Introduction to Methods of Social Research (4)
SOC 2020 - Social Statistics with Computer Applications (4)
Eight credits in sociology at the 2000 level or above

2. Anthropology courses

AN 1111 - Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (4)
AN 1511 - Human Evolution and Archaeology (4)
AN 4391 - Anthropological Theory (4)
Eight credits in anthropology at the 2000 level or above

Note:

No more than 8 credits counted toward the major may be taken in AN 3000 , AN 3930 or SOC /AN 4996 .
