Journalism and Media Studies, B.A., Specialization in Media and Society

Students must complete the Oakland University General Education Requirements , General College of Arts and Sciences requirements , College of Arts and Sciences Exploratory requirement , Major Requirements, and an appropriate number of free elective classes to meet the overall credit requirement for the degree (in most cases a minimum of 124; some degrees may require a greater number).

A student cannot declare a major and a minor in the same discipline (e.g. a BS in Accounting with a minor in Accounting).

Requirements for the liberal arts major in Journalism and Media Studies, B.A. program with a specialization in Media and Society


The specialization in Media and Society area helps students develop a rich, theoretically and historically grounded knowledge of the complex relationship between media and our social worlds. It will prepare students for a range of careers across media-related industries as well as develop as media literate citizens. While maintaining the blend between theory and practice, course work will focus more on Concept and Analysis, providing students with a firm liberal arts education. This area of specialization is ideal for students interested in studying and understanding the social and cultural role of media in everyday life.

To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and media studies with a specialization in media and society, students must complete a minimum of 40 credits, with at least 15 credits at the 3000 level or above, distributed as follows:
