Schedule of Classes

General Education Requirements

In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements  section of the catalog.

Requirements for the liberal arts major in French language and literatures, B.A. program

To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in French Language and Literature, students must complete 44 credits in French and French literature.

1. 36 credits at the 3000 and 4000 levels in French (FRH) or Modern Languages (ML) selected from the following courses:

• FRH 3140  -  French Grammar through Short Stories (4)  
• FRH 3180  -  French Creative Writing (4)  
• FRH 3510  -  French Civilization (4)  
• FRH 3550  -  Translation into English (4)  
• FRH 3570  -  French Business Communication (4)  
• FRH 3700  -  Cinema and Literature from the Francophone World (4)  
• FRH 3800  -  Introduction to Great Works of French Literature (4)  
• FRH 4081  -  French Conversation and Phonetics (4)  
• FRH 4550  -  Translation into French (4)  
• ML 3800  -  Global Gateways (4)  

Choose at least one 4000 level literature course selected from:

• FRH 4160  -  French Literature from the Middle Ages through the Sixteenth Century (4)  
• FRH 4170  -  French Literature - Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (4)  
• FRH 4190  -  French Literature - Nineteenth Century (4)  
• FRH 4200  -  Modern and Contemporary French Literature (4)  
• FRH 4970  -  Undergraduate Seminar (2 OR 4)  

2. Choose two General Education courses

Required for the Major and also satisfies the university’s General Education requirement in specific areas:

• LIT 1810  -  European Literature before 1850 (4)  before 1850 (Literature) or LIT 1820  -  European Literature after 1850 (4)  (Literature)
• FRH 1600  -  Texts from the French and Francophone World (pre-1800) (4)  (Global Perspecitves or Western Civilization not both)
• or FRH 1610  -  Texts from the French and Francophone World (post-1800) (4)  (Global Perspecitves or Western Civilization not both)

Additional program information

Students planning graduate work are strongly urged to study a second foreign language recommended by the department. At least 16 credits of those required for the major in any of the languages must be taken at Oakland University.

Applicable Minors

All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, French Language, French Language and Literature, International Orientation for EGR/CS, and Sustainability Engineering.
