Japanese Studies, B.A.

Program Website

Students must fulfill the Oakland University General Education Requirements, the General College of Arts and Sciences requirements , the College of Arts and Sciences Exploratory requirement , and the Major Requirements. Additionally, students must complete a sufficient number of free elective courses to meet the overall credit requirement for their degree. A minimum of 120 credits is required, although some degree programs may require a higher total credit count.

General Education Requirements


In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements  section of the catalog.

Requirements for the major in Japanese studies include:


The major in Japanese studies requires 40 credits of interdisciplinary coursework. Language courses at the 1000 and 2000 level do not count toward the total number of credits for the major. Courses that are listed under more than one section can only satisfy the requirement for one section. A minimum of 15 credit hours of the major must be at the upper division level (course numbers 3000 or above).

IS 4995 - Directed Research, focused on Japan (4 credits)


Japanese Language at the 3000-4000 Level (8 credits)


Other coursework


With the approval of the International Studies Program director or faculty adviser prior to enrollment, students may also use the following courses for major credit provided that the specific course topic to be studied in any given semester is consistent with their chosen major.

Note


Students using this catalog to meet Japanese studies major requirements may also use any course subsequently approved as satisfying requirements in the Japanese Studies or Chinese or South Asian Studies areas above and published in a later catalog.

Additional program information


Students wishing to study in Japan may do so through an exchange program between Oakland University and Nanzan University, Nagoya, Japan, and the Japan Center for Michigan Universities, Hikone, Shiga, Japan. See International Studies Program and Study Abroad.

Applicable Minors


All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, International Orientation for EGR/CS, Japanese Language, and Sustainability Engineering.
