Requirements for the Certificate in Disability Awareness and Literacy

Students qualify for a Certificate in Disability Awareness and Literacy by completing a minimum of three of the following courses listed below.

1. Required core course

• COM 1500 - Introduction to American Sign Language (4) or SOC 1000 - Introduction to Sociology (4)  or SOC 1010 - Introduction to Sociology through Health and Medicine (4)  

2. Electives (choose two)

• COM 3302 - Disability and Communication in Everyday Life (4)
• COM 3303 - American Sign Language for Healthcare Personnel and First Responders (4)
• COM 4402 - Health Communication (4)
• ENG 3686 - Disability Studies and Literature (4)
• SOC 2220 - Sociology of Mental Illness (4)

• (prerequisite SOC 1000 or SOC 1010)

• SOC 3210 - Sociological Perspectives on Aging (4)

• (prerequisite SOC 1000 or SOC 1010)

• SOC 3430 - Sociology of Health and Medicine (4)

• (prerequisite SOC 1000 or SOC 1010)

Students interested in this certificate should contact an advisor in the communication program in the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations or an advisor in the sociology program in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice.
