Student Responsibility

Student responsibility

Graduate students are governed by the policies of the University, Graduate Council and their academic program. It is the responsibility of the graduate student to comply with these policies and procedures and all applicable graduate program requirements that govern the individual program of study. Oakland University Graduate School administers academic policies and procedures and enforces graduate degree requirements which are determined by the Graduate Council and are applicable to all graduate students.

Degree program requirements, policies and regulations

Graduate Catalog

The Graduate Catalog in effect when a student is granted an offer of admission to the graduate program is the primary source of degree and program requirements. Students readmitted to a degree program must meet the degree requirements of the catalog in force at the time of the readmission. In addition to the degree and graduate program requirements in effect at the time of admission, all graduate students are subject to the policies and regulations stated in the current graduate catalog.

Most graduate programs also have supplementary student handbooks that provide students procedures and requirements specific to their discipline. It is important that graduate students adhere to all degree program requirements and policies and regulations to ensure satisfactory academic performance and subsequent graduation.

All data in the Oakland University Graduate Catalog reflects information as it was available at the publication date.

Student responsibility for monitoring current information

The University reserves the right to make changes in its programs, policies, rules, regulations, procedures, fees, tuition, housing rates, organizational structure, faculty and staff through the appropriate University processes. Every effort will be made to give as much advance notice as possible and publicize such changes. Because responsibility for complying with all applicable degree requirements ultimately rests with the student, Graduate Council urges all students to maintain close contact with their faculty adviser and appropriate administrative offices.

Oakland University Graduate School is the authoritative office for verifying deviations from provisions in the Graduate Catalog.

Exception to Graduate Catalog policy

Graduate students are expected to follow the policies and regulations in the Graduate Catalog. However, in unusual circumstances, an exception to policy may be requested. Exceptions to policies contained in the Graduate Catalog require the student to initiate a written Petition of Exception. The petition must be approved by the faculty adviser, graduate program coordinator or GCOI, and Oakland University Graduate School.

Exceptions will not be granted because a student pleads ignorance, or contends that he or she was not informed of policies or regulations.

Plan of Study

All accepted applicants, in consultation with their assigned faculty program adviser, must develop a Plan of Study that details specific courses the students will use to satisfy their degree requirements. The Plan of Study must be approved by the faculty program adviser and submitted by the student to Oakland University Graduate School.

Master’s and graduate certificate students must submit a department-approved Plan of Study by the end of their first semester of graduate coursework. Doctoral students must submit an approved Plan of Study prior to completion of the first year of coursework.

Note:  Credit granted for successful completion of a course toward an undergraduate degree program may not be repeated for a graduate degree. If a substitution is approved, the minimum number of program-approved graduate credits will be required. A Petition of Exception - OU Course Waiver/ Substitution requesting the substitution must be approved.

Approved Plan of Study

An approved Plan of Study may be amended at any time. Until formal approval of an updated Plan of Study is made, your original or current modification of the plan will remain in effect. Graduate students are responsible for meeting with their faculty adviser on an ongoing basis, keeping their Plan of Study updated and monitoring their academic progress through Online Degree Evaluation (WebCAPP).
