Graduate students are governed by the policies of the University, Graduate Council and their academic program. It is the responsibility of the graduate student to comply with these policies and procedures and all applicable graduate program requirements that govern the individual program of study. Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning administers academic policies and procedures and enforces graduate degree requirements which are determined by the Graduate Council and are applicable to all graduate students.
The Graduate Catalog in effect when a student is granted an offer of admission to the graduate program is the primary source of degree and program requirements. Students readmitted to a degree program must meet the degree requirements of the catalog in force at the time of the readmission. In addition to the degree and graduate program requirements in effect at the time of admission, all graduate students are subject to the policies and regulations stated in the current graduate catalog.
Most graduate programs also have supplementary student handbooks that provide students procedures and requirements specific to their discipline. It is important that graduate students adhere to all degree program requirements and policies and regulations to ensure satisfactory academic performance and subsequent graduation.
The Graduate Program Catalog and the Graduate Course Description Catalog together comprise the Oakland University Graduate Catalog. All data in this Oakland University Graduate Catalog reflects information as it was available at the publication date.
The Graduate Program Catalog is the listing of academic programs, degree requirements and academic policies and regulations for graduate study at Oakland University. Individual graduate programs and their requirements are provided here.
The online Graduate Course Description Catalog includes course listings and descriptions.
The online Graduate Course Description Catalog is updated daily and represents the most accurate source of graduate course information in effect for any given term. Although all courses appearing in the online Graduate Course Description Catalog are approved to be taught; not all courses will be offered each term. For a listing of courses offered for the current term, consult the online Schedule of Classes through Oakland University SAIL.
The University reserves the right to make changes in its programs, policies, rules, regulations, procedures, fees, tuition, housing rates, organizational structure, faculty and staff through the appropriate University processes. Every effort will be made to give as much advance notice as possible and publicize such changes. Because responsibility for complying with all applicable degree requirements ultimately rests with the student, Graduate Council urges all students to maintain close contact with their faculty adviser and appropriate administrative offices.
Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning is the authoritative office for verifying deviations from provisions in the Graduate Catalog.
Graduate students are expected to follow the policies and regulations in the Graduate Catalog. However, in unusual circumstances, an exception to policy may be requested. Exceptions to policies contained in the Graduate Catalog require the student to initiate a written Petition of Exception. The petition must be approved by the faculty adviser, graduate program coordinator or GCOI, and Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning.
Exceptions will not be granted because a student pleads ignorance, or contends that he or she was not informed of policies or regulations.
Additional information may be found in this catalog and on the Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning Web site.
