BIO 5900 - ST: Genetic and Genomic Engineering

(4 credits)

This course will cover the latest advances in genomic and genetic research tools for the manipulation of genes and genomes. Students will review the principles of genetics, genomic and molecular biology as they pertain to genomic and genetic engineering. Students will use this introductory knowledge as the basis for learning to navigate genomic databases and manipulate Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) whole genome sequencing date. They will also learn the latest genome editing techniques for the introduction of unique mutations/variants. The engineering of therapeutic molecules such as proteins and aptamers will also be covered. The ethical implications of genomic and genetic engineering will be discussed.
