Course requirements for the major in Japanese studies include:
The Japanese studies major consists of a minimum of 44 credits, of which 24 credits must be taken in Japanese studies; 12 credits in a complementary area of study; and 8 credits at the 300-400 level in an appropriate language. Language courses at the 100 and 200 level do not count toward the total number of credits for the major in either the primary or secondary area. The complementary area of study ordinarily consists of the appropriate introductory international course and two additional courses in the area, which may be either international studies courses or departmental courses. IS 490 , the capstone course, must have a subject matter relevant to Japanese studies in order to count for credit toward the major.
Duplication of course credit in the primary and complementary areas is not permitted. However, majors may apply their courses in international studies to their general education requirements.

3. 12 credits in complementary area - Chinese or South Asian studies
