Program Description:

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree is designed for professionals who are already engaged in successful careers (seven or more years of experience) and want to broaden their business knowledge and gain additional leadership, management and business operation skills. This program will offer the depth and rigor of a traditional MBA with the schedule flexibility required of executives who do not want to step out of their careers at this time. In response to market demand, two specialized industry concentrations are available: 1) EMBA in health care management or 2) EMBA in information systems leadership.

The program value is enhanced by the cohort class structure. Applicants are notified in August of each year regarding their admission to the fall cohort group. Each new cohort group moves through the 21-month program together. In doing so, the classroom dynamics, commitment to the program and resulting learning experience is greatly enhanced. This format also leverages the wealth of knowledge resident with each cohort group.

Likely candidates for the program concentrating in health care management include physicians; middle managers at hospitals, HMOs, and other health care facilities; registered nurses; insurance company administrators; and corporate benefits administrators.

Likely candidates for the program concentrating in information systems leadership include IT managers from any industry, computer science engineers, computer programmers and network managers.

Program delivery

The EMBA is designed to meet the needs of busy professionals by meeting on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday on alternate weekends. In order to assure effective instruction and interaction, classes will be strictly limited to a maximum of 30 students.

Program tuition

The tuition for the EMBA program is $37,500. This fee includes all course registrations, textbooks, and meals on Fridays and Saturdays when classes are scheduled to meet. The total tuition will be due in six installments, a $1,000 deposit due when accepting admission, and five payments due at the beginning of each term. Students may apply to receive Financial Aid by contacting the University Financial Aid Office.

Admission terms and application deadlines

Applicants are admitted Fall semester only. Before an applicant’s file can be reviewed for full program admission, all application documents must be received in Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning by the semester deadlines listed below. Incomplete applications will not be sent to departments for admission review.

  • July 1 fall semester

Readmission and program transfer: Requests for readmission and program transfers must be completed and approved prior to the beginning of a semester.

International application deadlines:  International applications are reviewed for fall and winter admission only. To ensure adequate time for review, international applications must be completed at least six months before the desired date of intended enrollment at the University. All international application materials must be submitted by May 1 for fall admission and by September 1 for winter admission. International applicants are not eligible for Special Graduate classification.

Special Graduate classification:  Applicants who are seeking a graduate degree or graduate certificate, but are unable to meet the deadline for filing all required application materials or credentials for graduate admission, may contact the department and request Special Graduate temporary admission.  The applicant must submit an Application for Admission to Graduate Study, plus a copy of a transcript providing evidence of a bachelor’s degree awarded and any specific evidence concerning their qualifications for graduate study as required by the department.  Up to 12 credits may be earned in the Special Graduate classification. Admission as a special graduate student in no way assures subsequent admission to a degree or graduate certificate program.

Students may request special graduate classification beginning  with the dates below.

  • August 1 for fall semester
  • December 1 for winter semester
  • April 1 for summer semester

Note: Special Graduate classification will not be granted after the first week of classes in a semester.

Admission review and assessment

Admission to graduate study at Oakland University is selective. In making admission recommendations to Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning, each department assesses the potential of applicants for success in the program by examining their undergraduate records, goal statement, letters of recommendation, prerequisite courses and any other admission requirements established by the academic department.

Program prerequisites

Students in the program without evidence of the required skills in quantitative methods and computer skills will be expected to complete the appropriate workshops in the summer before entering the EMBA program. The workshops in Quantitative Methods and Computer Skills will be offered on the same Friday and Saturday schedule as the EMBA program on a weekend during the summer before the EMBA program starts.

Degree requirements

The Executive Master of Business Administration degree consists of 39 credits taken over 21 months. Twenty-nine of the 39 credits consist of foundation courses completed by the entire cohort. Additionally, the cohort may split into two groups to complete 10 credits of electives related to their field of concentration. Courses are designed and taught by a combination of full-time faculty from Oakland University’s School of Business Administration who are respected scholars within their field and experienced professionals and practitioners from the related areas of concentration.

Course requirements

b. Concentrations (10 credits)

Each student will be expected to complete 10 credits of elective coursework in either the health care management concentration or the information systems leadership concentration. The interest and experience of the cohort will be considered in selecting the electives.

Satisfactory academic progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is the term used to denote a student’s successful completion of coursework toward a certificate or degree. Federal regulations require the Office of Financial Aid to monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress for all financial aid recipients each semester.

Students who fall behind in their coursework, or fail to achieve minimum standards for grade point average and completion of classes, may lose their eligibility for all types of federal, state and university aid. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for additional details.

Good academic standing

All graduate students are expected to remain  in good academic standing throughout the entire course of their graduate program. To be in good academic standing, a graduate student must make satisfactory progress toward fulfilling degree requirements, including the completion of critical degree milestones as set forth by the academic program. The student must also maintain a minimum semester and overall GPA of 3.0.

Good academic standing is a requirement for:

  • Holding a Graduate Assistantship
  • Receiving a fellowship or scholarship
  • Advancing to candidacy for a graduate degree
  • Going on a leave of absence
  • Obtaining a graduate certificate or degree from Oakland University.

Additionally, graduate students must meet all department academic standards which may be more stringent than the minimum set forth by the University.

Department requirements:  In accordance with the university requirements for graduate students, a grade-point average of 3.0 is required for graduation. Students, therefore, should maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Students may be dismissed if they do not maintain a GPA of 3.0 or appropriate progress toward the degree as determined by the Office of Graduate Business Programs. Any course resulting in a grade below 2.0 must be repeated.

Graduate students who are not in good academic standing for any reason are subject to probation and/or dismissal from further graduate study.
