Program Description

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree program is designed for experienced professionals who have focused on developing their careers and want to broaden their business knowledge and gain additional leadership, management and business operations skills. This program offers the depth and rigor of a traditional MBA with the schedule flexibility required of professionals. 

The program value is enhanced by the cohort class structure where a new group of students start in the fall of each year and take all their core classes together.  In doing so, the classroom dynamics, commitment to the program and resulting learning experience is greatly enhanced.

Program delivery

The EMBA is designed to meet the needs of busy professionals by meeting in person on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday on alternate weekends for five semesters: fall, winter, summer, fall and winter.  Some online instruction may be incorporated into classes.  In order to assure effective instruction and interaction, class sizes are limited.

Admission terms and application deadlines

Applicants are admitted fall semester only. Before an applicant’s file can be reviewed for full program admission, all application documents must be received in Oakland University Graduate School by the semester deadlines listed below. Incomplete applications will not be sent to departments for admission review.

Application requirements

To be considered for graduate admission, applicants must submit all Graduate Application Requirements and additional department requirements by the published application deadlines:

  • Curriculum Vitae or Resumé
  • Official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores. The GMAT scores must be five years or less at the time of the applicant’s intended enrollment at Oakland University.
    • Applicants who have earned a master’s degree (or higher), have extensive management experience, or have earned additional certifications during their career may request a waiver of the GMAT score. To request a waiver, an applicant must include a GMAT waiver form for consideration as part of their admission packet. The request for waiver is subject to the approval of the Graduate Admissions Committee.
  • A minimum of seven years of professional experience.
  • A personal interview with the admissions committee or a designated representative.
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Admission review and assessment

Admission to graduate school at Oakland University is selective. In making admission recommendations to Oakland University Graduate School, the admission committee will assess the potential of applicants for success in the program by examining their undergraduate records, goal statement, recommendation forms, prerequisite courses, experience, and any other admission requirements established by the academic department.

Degree requirements

The Executive Master of Business Administration degree consists of 39 credits taken over 21 months. Twenty-nine of the 39 credits consist of foundation courses completed by the entire cohort. The remaining 10 credits are taken as electives. 

Course requirements

a.Preparatory Work and Program Launch (1 credit)

Online preparatory work is recommended for students who may need to brush up on their quantitative skills and get some basic introduction to business concepts. The online preparatory work is not mandatory.

The program will launch with a four-day mandatory boot camp that will include the Teambuilding, Communication, and Introduction to Business Concepts course. The teambuilding and communication portion will be covered in one segment and the business concepts in another.

EMBA 5000  - Teambuilding, Communication, and Introduction to Business Concepts  (1 credit)

i.    Teambuilding and Communication - This section of the course will help students to learn basic skills to work in teams and communicate effectively.

ii.    Introduction to Business Concepts - This section of the course will provide an introduction to key business concepts to help students get a broad introduction to the curriculum.

c. Leadership Courses (9 credits)

Each student must complete 9 credits of leadership coursework.  These courses develop students’ leadership skills through coursework and professional development activities:

Each student must complete 6 credits of coursework addressing issues that are relevant and current for most businesses:

e. C-Suite Presentations and Professional Development (1 credit)

Through a series of executive seminars and interactions with professional development staff, students will further develop their leadership skills. Students must complete 3 hours of seminars and professional development activities per fall and winter semester.

Satisfactory academic progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is the term used to denote a student’s successful completion of coursework toward a certificate or degree. Federal regulations require the Office of Financial Aid to monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress for all financial aid recipients each semester.

Students who fall behind in their coursework, or fail to achieve minimum standards for grade point average and completion of classes, may lose their eligibility for all types of federal, state and university aid. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for additional details.

Good academic standing

All graduate students are expected to remain in good academic standing throughout the entire course of their graduate program. To be in good academic standing, a graduate student must make satisfactory progress toward fulfilling degree requirements, including the completion of critical degree milestones as set forth by the academic program. The student must also maintain a minimum semester and overall GPA of 3.0.

Additionally, graduate students must meet all department academic standards which may be more stringent than the minimum set forth by the University.

Department requirements:  In accordance with the university requirements for graduate students, a grade-point average of 3.0 is required for graduation. Students, therefore, should maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Students may be dismissed if they do not maintain a GPA of 3.0 or appropriate progress toward the degree as determined by the Office of Graduate Business Programs. Any course resulting in a grade below 2.0 must be repeated.  

Graduate students who are not in good academic standing for any reason are subject to probation and/or dismissal from further graduate study.

Plan of study

All accepted applicants, in consultation with their assigned faculty program adviser, must develop a plan of study that details specific courses the students will use to satisfy their degree requirements. The plan of study must be approved by the faculty program adviser and submitted by the student to Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning.
