Glossary of Terms

The following terms are used throughout Acalog™.


Active

Active data will be displayed on the Gateway, while inactive data will not. Setting data as inactive is a simple way to hide information from public view while it is being completed. See: Inactive
 

Catalog


The complete listing of all courses, programs, departments and schools/colleges for a particular academic calendar year.
 

Core

A combination of descriptive text and/or list of courses that may be created within programs.
 

Course

Information about a particular course in an area of study.
 

Custom Page

A page of front-of-the-catalog information shown via the Gateway navigation. See: Filter
 

Department

The lowest level data structure used for organizing data within the system. The department level comes below the school/college level and may also be created directly below the institution. See: Hierarchy, Institution, School/College
 

Hierarchy

The hierarchical data structure used for organizing the institution, schools/colleges and departments. See: Institution, School/College, Department
 

HTML (HyperText Markup Language)

An open source language used to markup web page text with different fonts, colors, images, etc.

 

In-Page Navigation

Navigation placed within the content area of pages in the system. See: Module Navigation, Navigation, Tab Navigation
 

Institution

The highest-level data structure used for organizing data within the system for a given organization. The institution level comes above the school/college level in the hierarchical structure. See: Hierarchy, Institution, School/College
 

IP Address

A unique number, like 127.168.6.255, that specifies a particular server’s location on the internet.
 

Module

A section or grouping of similar functions within Acalog™.
 

Module Navigation

Consistent links shown on the left of the Publisher which allow a user to select modules for managing data. See: In-Page Navigation,

Navigation, Tab Navigation
 

Navigation

Consistent (and usually persistent) links which allow a user to select different pages within a web site. See: In-Page Navigation
 

Organization

The highest data structure level used for organizing data within the system. Organizations may contain multiple catalogs. See: Catalog
 

Portfolio

A convenient storage location where users browsing online catalogs may store courses and programs that they find interesting. The stored information will be available when they return at a later date.
 

Program

A combination of descriptive texts and lists of courses that is made up of cores and, possibly, shared cores.

 

School/College

A second level data structure used for organizing data. The school/college level comes underneath the institution level and, typically, above the department level in the hierarchical structure. See: Hierarchy, Institution, Department
 

Shared Core

A special type of core that is created and maintained within one area of the database and may be added to any program in the system. See: Core
 

Sub Core

A lower level core in a program’s or shared core’s hierarchy. See: Core
 

Tab Navigation

Tab shaped links shown at the top of many Publisher pages that allow a user to select more specific features for managing data. See: In-Page Navigation, Module Navigation, Navigation
 

User

A person who logs into an account on the Publisher. This is also a term used for a person who browses the Gateway.
 

User Account

The account of a user who may log into the Publisher.
